Brief History of Online Gambling
The World Wide Web’s first online casino opened its virtual doors on August 18, 1995. The company was InterCasino, which provided users access to only 18 casino games and provided access to the National Indian Lottery. Later that same year, Chris Moneymaker takes home $2.5 million from the WSOP after winning a satellite at PokerStars online.
By 2004 Microgaming was offering more than 250 games and the poker fad is out of control. Televised poker tournaments are the new craze. In 2005, Microgaming’s total progressive jackpot exceeds $160 million with over 5000 individual winners. Later, a Florida winner lands nearly $2 million at Carnival Casino in the Gold Rally slot game, setting a record for the highest ever online progressive jackpot payout.
