I've seen it happen in live poker. I've played a lot more hands of online poker than live poker, but at a tournament in Atlanta, I saw a woman knock out two players (I was one of them) with pocket aces on two consecutive hands.
I think the reason you see so many more lucky/weird/unusual cards in online poker is simply because you see so many more hands per hour. I don't buy into the theory that the sites are rigged or that the randomness of the sites is predictable. Sure, when you start with the same seed in a random number generator, you will get the same results. The key is to vary the random number seed, and there are lots of ways to do this. From what I've seen on the sites, they all use pretty sophisticated random number generator schemes.
