I respectfully disagree that it's all about luck. Sure, luck plays a factor, but there are specific strategies to play depending on the cards that you are dealt. The key to remember is that you are playing against the dealer, not trying to get 21. Depending on the point total of the cards you have and the card the dealer is showing, a good stand can force the dealer to go bust, because he has to keep drawing until he reaches 17 or more.

For example:

You are dealt = 12
Dealer shows

In this case, you want to stand on 12, because the dealer is showing a low card and will need to keep drawing until he reaches 17 or higher, and has a good chance of going bust.

A typical dealer draw might fall as follows:
= 6 + 7 + 2 + 10 = 25 and the dealer goes bust.

New blackjack players would try to hit on 12, thinking they had to get above 17 themselves, with no regard for the card the dealer is showing. The better strategy is to force the dealer to draw when he has a low card in hopes he will hit an inopportune face card. When the dealer goes bust, it doesn't matter what your cards add up to.
