Another aspect of this was that it was the first hand, so you didn't know how the table was playing in terms of tight or loose, right? I'm hesitant to make any big moves (unless I know I've got the nuts) until I get a sense of the players. I will make decisions according to how solid the players are. If a tight player makes a big bet, and there's a lot of ways I could be beaten, I try to lay it down. That's what they say after all, the measure of a good player is not in what they decide to play, but in what they decide to lay down.
