Yes, it's definitely possible to play too tight, especially at the end of the game when only a few players are left.
As for the standings, try to remember that all it takes is one big pot to climb in the standings. If it's still early in the tournament, relax and wait for your cards. When you get them, you will jump from the bottom third to the top third instantly. In addition, remember that some of the players above you in the tournament are donkeys who have gotten lucky (like with 8 7 offsuit.) They will drop off the charts before the end, and that will help you move up, too.
