Its true that you will have more information if you are closer to the button but another way to look at it is when you are first to act you have the first chance to bluff at the pot. This can be important in holdem when there are many flops that no one hits and the first person to take a stab at it will usually be the first one to take the pot down. And by acting first you can take the first stab at the pot.
