Default Representation in early position

Everyone's saying that raising in early position isn't good since there are a lot of players to act after you, but let's check out an example right here: I raised in early position with 7-6S. Most players fold, I mean, what hands would you raise with in early position, big cards and pocket pairs right?
Then there's this guy with A-Q in late position, everyone folded to him and he decides to call. Let us say that the flop is 10-4-9 rainbow. Now you sigh sadly (don't overreact, you don't want people to think you're strong), he bets and you raise. Now there is no way in hell that he can call, I mean, doesn't this seem like something like pocket queens or kings, aces or jacks?

Post replies please.
