Check raising is a great way to sucker players into a big pot. Say you have K-K and the other player has like K-10. You both call after one of you bets preflop. Flop comes K-J-3 rainbow.

You check the flop, he bets, now would be a good time for a raise. Especially since he can have a straight draw with Q-10 or A-Q.

This would probably be the best possible play at the time and would garuntee that he can't just get a chance to catch his BS straight without putting a lot of chips in the pot.
