Default Slow Laptop

My Dell Laptop with Windows XP Professional seems to take about 10 minutes to startup and another 10 when I shut down. I suspect that it is Spyware (or whatever) that is causing it to slow down. I'm thinking about re-formatting the C: drive and reloading the poker stuff.

Anyone else's computer slowing down?
Does spyware affect WiFi performance?
Any recommendations?

I've been putting off any downtime 'cause I like to play so much.

I would wipe the hard drive and reload as if its day one and see if that speeds things up....and be more careful what you download ...

You might try to run a Clean Up program on it. I don't have a laptop with Windows XP Pro on it but our computers at work are all Windows XP Pro networked and we have a program called Clean Up! that gets rid of all the junk cached files. I never knew they kept so many!!! It gets rid of all the junk and it really speeds things up. You might try this before clearing everything and starting over.

Clean up is good, also try a program called HiJack this -
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3...-10227353.html

You run it and it creates a log file, which you then post to a forum (such as http://www.pcguide.com/vb/) where people who know what they're doing will review the log and tell you what to kill.

I've done this several times and it's always helped.

Hey thanks for the info guys. I did try the Cleanup program and it is under Start>AllPrograms>Accessories>SystemTools>DiskClea nUp. It has seems to have helped. I'll try that Hijack This after the League is done.

I am a computer geek and hate virus programs and spyware programs...technically because they are viruses themselves. I also don't need them because I can take the infections off myself. As for you slowing up if you have windows update still on I would suggest turning it off. That checks for updates all day long and slows your processor down a lot. I hate windows update so much I deleted the registry key for it. LOL, bye bye.

Thanks for the advice...I use a Dell Laptop everyday, and was having the same problems as Iceberg, so I turned Windows Update off and it instantly sped it up...I am still also thinking about cleaning off the C drive, but Norton hasnt found any Virus's and also I used Ad-Aware quite often...But we will see how things go...

Again...thanks for the advise...even if you are a Stinkin Astros Fan...LOL

Another way to speed up the time is to increase the memory. My Dell came with the 256, which I swapped with a 512 and now it runs much faster. Price was only $60. Cheap considering a new laptop would cost about $1K.
