What I'm talking about is, for example, people colluding to build up the pot, knowing how will most likely win. For instance, on PokerStars, you can see where people are from by rolling over their avatar. I've often seen two or more people from the same town (not a big city, someplace small) at the same table. When it's their turn, it takes them a while to make a play. I was getting the sense that they were communicating by phone or IM to figure out what they wanted to do. It's one of the reasons, although I really liked PokerStars' site, I quit playing there. You can really use a long time allotment to make a decision. Not only did that really slow play down, but I think it gave some people the opportunity to collude.

The question is, though, do they win big? If they do, there's some evidence to support your suspicions. If they don't, cheating doesn't help them. I still say it doesn't matter whether people are in the same town; with today's instantaneous communications, people can be anywhere and collude.

IM and poker is very common. I dont know how much it helps. I guess you could reraise off of a friend to get more money in the pot.

Loosing sucks, and sometimes it looks like we lost to a cheater!! (at least thats what we can fell after having such an episode...)
But hey:
shit happens!
so as bad beats!!
Cheating is in my opinion impossible!
IM is not relevant in the long run...

Have to disagree with you on this one, Lyt. The point about being in the same town is that chances are they are friends; they know each other. In my experience playing live in local tournaments, I have heard players talking about being at the same table online.
However, I'm not usually one for beating a dead horse. (Only if the horse has really pissed me off.) So no, I have no actual proof or evidence that this has happened in any game I've been in online. But I can't completely disregard my woman's intuition. It's been proven right too many times....
