Default Common Mistakes by Beginning Poker Players

Here's a great article that points out 10 common mistakes that sink beginning poker players, plus there's a bonus tip for online poker players...

Do you make the same mistakes when playing? What other advice can you give to beginners?

I'll have to try that last tip--I think I may have made that mistake in the past.

I don't agree about the bluffing one, though. Although you can't bluff all the time, if you hardly bluff at all you won't win the game. That old poker saying "Rocks make it to the final table but don't win the tournament" is true. I used to be one of those rocks. I always did well, both online and live, but kept finishing 5th to 3rd. As soon as I loosened up my play, I improved. And the thing about playing less powerful hands is that then you are going to have to either fold or bluff if you don't hit on the flop. So if you play aggressively, you can still win with nothing. Of course, the caveat to this is whether you think your opponent really has the nuts. If so, he's not likely to fold, no matter how aggressive you are.

What does a two color deck have to do with anything? I would be worried about pink colored cards.

For beginners? Most beginners bluff far too much. And the tend to use the big, all-in bluff. It actually works fairly often since the opponent doesn't have enough of a hand to call, but the problem is that when this type of bluff doesn't work, the cost is very high. So, despite the winning bluffs, the overall result is negative.

It may be helpful if you've had ONE TOO MANY cold ones, but otherwise I agree with you. If you're not paying enough attention to the board in front of you, then you obviously shouldn't be wasting your time playing in the first place!

I agree, I try and keep my bluffs to the minimum, and not do an All-In unless I really can win that hand in some theory.

Also it depends on ur standing on the chips compared 2 others. Bluffing with no risk just doesn't exist, but a chipleader can still get away with it, even if someone sees through it.

yeah this overplaying of suited hands is so so true. I am so sick and tired when I play with beginners who play and call with anything and get lucky on the board and hit straights and stuff. I mean on one occasion I was playin 3 handed and had like pocket 9's and lost to a friend whos hand didn't even add up to 6 because 'it was suited'.
