The situation is the same in Denver and Atlanta. After 9/11, Hold'Em tournaments in bars boomed because it was a way for the bars to get traffic back through the door. As Think says, there is no buy-in, and sometimes the prizes are only gift certificates (as in the case of the $10 I won in Atlanta) or seats in other tourneys.
It's still a lot of fun, though, and coming home with a gift certificate after placing second in a live tourney was great, considering the cost of my buy-in.
