It has been a few years but I went through American Express. They gave a great rate and offered to lower theirs to match a competitors. They also gave reward points on my American Express card. I also found their closing costs to be very low. Let me know if you go this route. I would like to know if they are still doing all these things.

I did the LendingTree thing, and all I got was harrassed by some of the lending institutions wanting me to sign with them. They called everyday, several times a day. Their rates weren't any better then the rates offered by Countrywide or MBNA, or some of the bigger lending institutions. I believe we are going to use USAA, so if anyone has any input about USAA's mortgage setup, let me know. They dont give commissions to their loan people, so they dont have any incentive to bump up the rates, or charge any of these odd charges.

I told them that I was just trying to get an idea of how much it was going to cost me, and that I had decided not to move. Once they found out that I was not going to get a mortgage with anyone, the phones went dead. ha. I ended up switching from Countrywide to USAA. USAA has been ok, not great. In the end, they got me a good rate, so I cant complain.

Posting a reply to this thread, after I closed on the new house. Used USAA federal bank out of Texas. It was not a pretty closing. They got my whole loan structured incorrectly. Then, when I go to call my "Closer", he was not available. I had to call yet another person to get things straightened out. They charged me with things that they said they would not. They didnt even get the down payment right... In the end, we got it straightened out, but I thought I would vent a bit. Thanks for everyone's opinions!
