Default How does online No-Limit differ from live No-Limit?

the difference in the two is that online players are more tempted to throw all of their chips into the pot with a below average hand where as in live poker. many players would throw away hands like J8 suited or k 8 or k9 but online players seem to think these hands are strong so you have to be more careful online!

In addition to the reasons mentioned in the initial post, live no limit Hold 'Em has much more of a social factor. It's much easier to play the people in live poker than in online poker. Sure, there are tells in both kinds of poker, but in live poker, you have the advantages of being able to read body language and facial features, and in some cases, you can even tell whether alcohol intake may be having an effect on an opponent's play. Side chat is much more casual in live play, too, since it's much easier to speak than to type in between hands.

Also, in live poker, you usually don't have to deal with as many jerks. In the live games I've played, people have generally been polite. When people are physically sitting across a table from each other, there's a very real urge to avoid conflict, whereas there is nothing to prevent that in online poker, so you run into a lot of insulting, trash talking jerks in the virtual environment.

Default its different for sure

but compared to online there are two drastic differences i have experienced the first is live poker you dont get the same pocket cards or the crazy boards u get on sites like ipoker, say what u want it just doesnt happen.. EVER. you will learn the value of a small pocket pair in live poker a lot quicker than the contempt they breed online. Also the bottom line is noone usually once to embarrass themselves live so they rearely will make the crazy calls are moves u see online, and when they do it will usually be accomponied by some long excuse about , "hjow they normally wouldnt do this". or only because they are drunk something stupid but you just wont see the bad calls, even at the low buyin tables the play is at a higher level, and it is very easy to figure out who the real players are and who are just fishing and you will do best if you avoid playing with the one or two other sharks at the table and stick to pounding the guppys.

I've seen it happen in live poker. I've played a lot more hands of online poker than live poker, but at a tournament in Atlanta, I saw a woman knock out two players (I was one of them) with pocket aces on two consecutive hands.

I think the reason you see so many more lucky/weird/unusual cards in online poker is simply because you see so many more hands per hour. I don't buy into the theory that the sites are rigged or that the randomness of the sites is predictable. Sure, when you start with the same seed in a random number generator, you will get the same results. The key is to vary the random number seed, and there are lots of ways to do this. From what I've seen on the sites, they all use pretty sophisticated random number generator schemes.

Wow, after a couple of short posts, I had only a few points. After one long post and another short one, I suddenly have 70 points. Is that the plan, BBP?

Another difference I find in online poker is that you have real time chip counts on all players. I think this makes calculating the amount you want to bet easier--you can see exactly how much it would take to put a player all in, or make them commit half their chip stack.

You've been luckier than I have as far the people you've played live with. Although some of the young men that participated in the live games I've played were nice and acted like properly socialized human beings, most of them were rude, loud, vulgar, and ignored the rules. Maybe the Yanks could take a lesson from the Southerners!

There is definitely a culture of manners in the South, and that probably makes a difference. However, I've played live in Denver, too, and haven't had any problems with anyone yet.

Maybe it has something to do with the East Coast ... I know I've met a lot of East Coasters who are upfront, no nonsense, no BS people.
