For a begginer I think the best book is Phil Helmuths Play Like the Pros. It has more games than just holdem and he give you begginer, intermediate, and advance plays which you can put into your game at your own pace.

And then if you have not read it.

Harrington on holdem is a very good book about tournaments.

Personally me i loved Howard Lederer's move pokers, tells you all you need to know in 2 DVD's. But if were talking books i like Super system I/II. And pretty much anything from David Sklansky, hes good stuff.

To the End!

My two favorite that I own right now are Supersystem II and Gordon's Little Green Book. Gordon's is nice because as your game evolves and you reread it certain parts make more sense, and he does a great job of describing thought process of the games theory and not just talking about good starting hands and whatnot. Full of good advice and very thorough. I would recommend reading books by Sklansky, Harrington, Malmuth, Caro, I don't pick up books by Helmuth for the simple fact he has written so many. If he did a good job the first time he wouldn't need so many more. Look at Brunson's, all he did is retouch his original Supersystem, not rewrite a book 20 different ways to make a buck. The list of names I gave, by the way, are recommended by Phil Gordon in his book...I have not read them all. Caro is very good with tells and mental aspects. Beyond that I'm not sure about all of them. Good luck.
