Default HELP! poker odds convertion from US system!?

i just recieved my two books of harrington's NL Tournament strategy. i started to read it, but i'm really confused about odds calculation by american and english way.

can anyone help me how to convert 4to1 or 5to2 or 13to6 odds into european format (i saw that odds format on some english betting sites, and i still can't understand it).. or to explain me what those odds mean and how are they calculated..

thx

Hi Dovla,

I'm not sure what "European format" would be, unless it's just percentages. If it's percentages, it's pretty easy; 4 to 1 odds would be the same as 20% (4 to 1 is the same as one chance in 5, and 1/5*100 = 20%).

Does that make sense?

?!?!?!?! you now confused me more.. how 4 to 1 can be one chance in 5 ?!
as i'm trying to understand you wanted to say that 5 to 1 is 20% and with that calculation 4 to 1 is 25%.. uh.. if i'm right

but what is 5-2 then?! really hard for me to adjust to these odds but i must.. (we use decimals here.. like 1.25 i think that is 4-1 or 1-4 .. i mean if you put 10$ on 1.25 odd your winnings will be 2.5$)

Another way to look at it would be 4 to 1 against winning. Out of a total of 5 chances, you only have one chance to win. The 20% comes from the fact that there are a total of 5 chances, and only 1 is a possible winner. 4 are not, hence 4 to 1 against.

In this case, the total odds are 7, with only two chances to win. 2/7*100= 28.57% chance of winning.

Sorry if I'm making this more confusing than helping.

Dovla,

Elon05 made a great post a while back, with simple rules for calculating ballpark pot odds. Maybe this will help.

Lytspeed is right. 4 to 1 is 20% Probability and 1 in 5 chances.

There's a really cool tool available online: Texas Holdem Poker - Odds Explanation that'll calculate the odds for any x to y odds.

Update: Actually the calculator is here: Texas Holdem Poker - Odds Converter

yeah.. this elon post really helped me to understand.. i'm still figthing to get into this but when i calculate outs and multiple x 2 (for turn and x4 to river) i get percents.. and it's still easier that way for me..

those harrington books are masterpiece, but when i changed my play style (not too much but i'm sure i'm making 50% less mistakes) i started to suffer the biggest bad beat series at my poker career (from last 20 tournaments i played - and i played for higher stakes than i did before, i was sucked really hard in 19, and in one i lost huge pot with higher flush (that was the only exception)) .. but i hope this will end and i will start earning some money
