Default The Theory of Poker

I am in the midst of reading The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. It is a great book that really explains the odds of poker and how to play poker based somewhat on mathematics. I am about half way through it and highly recommend it to any poker player, beginner, intermediate, or pro.

The thing about Skalansky is so many of his ideas have been redefined better in other poker books, for example in Harrington on Hold'em.

This is the best book of them all. Its for advance players and has to do with alot of math. But of all the books it my favorite.

Here's what I would read (in this order) for beginning players (and since I am one, I would know...):

Limit Holdem:
(I'm assuming you're not Daddy Warbucks and will start playing small stakes limit holdem)

1. Winning Low Limit Holdem (Lee Jones): Great first book - trust me.

2. (If you're going to play online at all) Internet Texas Holdem (Hilger): This book will give you lots of examples, sample hands and sound strategies for playing. There's also a great starting hand selection chart that will really help you get a feel for how and why certain hands are played preflop.

3. Small Stakes Holdem (Miller/Sklansky): Once you've had some good practice using the techniques from Jones and Hilger, this is probably the one book that will help you crush the weak players that play small stakes holdem. Read and re-read this book and use the experience you've gained playing to really kick your game up a notch. Tight-aggressive play is not a natural playing style for anybody (and don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise): it has to be learned. This book will definitely help in that regard.

For No Limit Holdem, read Harrington on Holdem Volumes I and II. Plain and simple. Trust me, you won't find better books anywhere.

Whether or not you become a winning player after reading these books depends on you, but these books will give you a good head start and a great edge on many players out there.

K.

Default ok

Sounds like a good one xblurr im not really much of a fan of Skalansky but he is a great poker player who knows his odds well. So i might check that boo out and see what i can learn. But i really think the key to winning is by playing a lot.
