AS with anything in NL poker, there is no correct way to play any single hand. Poker is situationa, especially no limit. AK is a DRAWING hand though, whiole it is the most powerful drawing hand, it is still just ace high until a flop. Most people over play this and go broke with it eventually in tournaments. Make a decent raise and see a flop, if you hit nothing and a guy comes out betting at you, there is a good chance youre beat with only 6 outs and 2 cards to come. Of course short stacked or in tourneys with extreemly large blinds sometimes allin is the correct move, btu ideally you want someone with a weaker Ace or King to call hit that card and then you take them down. xmanpike

AK is the best starting hand in poker, starting being the key work. I have seen many people die in tourny's with this hand. I don't understand why people do it but I see it happen way to often. As xmanpike said, if you are short stacked it is the hand you dream of seeing before the blinds eat you up. But if you are in a good position as far as chips go, if you don't hit the flop and your pot odds arent with you for the turn/river, please lay it down. Jason FLOP: ![]()

ak is a powerfull hand but be aware that most people play it to agressive... when two people raise in front of me at a table... i consider to lay it down.... dont get to addictited to ace king because if you overrate it... you will lose alot of money

Given your position in a game, you might want to think about re-raising with AK, especially if it's suited. A lot of people will make standard raises with medium pocket pairs, and in those cases, AKs can turn out to be a great hand for you. If you're last to act in a hand, and have the chips, consider a re-raise. Your opponent will probably be able to isolate you to a few hands - AA, KK, or AK, and if they call, then you get a better idea of where you stand. If you don't hit a dream flop (straight or flush), then you can drop the hand.

i feel the advantage of ak is that in most situations you can attempt to read for aa or kk, and if you are fairly certain that those you are playing against dont have these you can play it strong and hard preflop, some of the time you can get everyone to fold, and the rest you are hopefully about 45% at worst.
