The 2006 Crown Australian Poker Championships at Crown Casino in Melbourne,
Australia, have been underway since the 4th, and already this year's
tournament series is shaping up to the biggest Australia has ever seen. For
instance, last year's first event featured a A$200 buy-in and fielded 212
entries. By way of comparison, this year's first event featured a A$500 buy-in
and fielded 415 entries. The fields comprising the events have also been
composed of players from all over the world, giving the results list an
international feel. It's not hard to imagine that some of the Australian names
you see here today might be in the money lists at the WSOP next year. The
impression from afar is that poker has truly arrived in Australia.
Event #1, the A$500+60 no-limit hold'em event, drew a whopping 415 entries.
The A$208,744 prize pool was split up among the final 4 tables of the
tournament. Australian Paul Taylor claimed A$62,250 when he outlasted
countryman Tony Bechara to claim the title.
Event #2, the A$500+65 pot-limit hold'em event, drew 213 entries. The
A$188,500 prize pool was split up among the final 2 tables. Robert Lumb of the
United Kingdom took home A$60,321 for his first place finish over Dr. Wes
Bugiera of Australia.
Event #3, the A$1,000+100 limit hold'em event, had 136 participants. The final
2 tables split up the A$136,000 prize pool. Australian Andrew Kanaridis took
home the largest share, A$43,520, for outlasting fellow Australian Leo Boxell.
Event #4, the A$1,000+100 no-limit hold'em event, saw a healthy field of 256
players. The A$256,000 prize pool was split among the final 3 tables, with the
largest portion of it going to Sweden's Ollie Sundin. He took home A$79,360
for finishing off Australia's Ian Schoots.
