The start of the new year brings with it a new season of poker tournaments.
This January sees the return of the World Poker Tour to Paradise Island in the
Bahamas, back-to-back WPT and World Series of Poker Circuit events in Tunica,
and the second WPT event in the last 4 months at the Borgata in Atlantic City.
Between the preliminary events and main events of these tournaments, tens of
millions of dollars will be up for grabs. Here's a look at some of the major
events in the poker world throughout the first month of 2006.
PokerStars Caribbean Adventure
January 4 - 10, Atlantis Resort and Casino, Paradise Island, Bahamas
The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure kicked off the 2005 tournament year with a
bang when England's John Gale turned a $127 satellite win into $865,000. This
year's event promises to be even bigger, with 6 full days of competition
scheduled to determine the newest WPT champion. You can follow all the action
live on the Official PokerStars blog.
2006 Jack Binion WSOP Circuit - Grand Casino Tunica
January 5 - 26, Grand Casino, Tunica, MS
When his sister Becky Behnen gained control of the Horseshoe in Las Vegas -
and with it the World Series of Poker - Jack Binion started the World Poker
Open. After the purchase of his Horseshoe casino by Harrah's, Binion has added
his name to its new January WSOP Circuit event. This series of tournaments has
a schedule similar to those of the World Poker Open in years past, full of
games overlooked by many tournaments today (including the World Series
itself). It remains to be seen whether this Circuit stop will be as popular as
the WPO has been in the past, but it certainly has the makings of a
player-friendly tournament series. Unless noted, all tournaments are in
freezeout format.

World Poker Open
January 9 - 23, Gold Strike Hotel Casino, Tunica, MS
The tournament that once bore the name of Jack Binion - and with it an implied
link to the beginnings of tournament poker - is now simply the World Poker
Open. In stark contrast to the WSOP Circuit down the road, this year's WPO
breaks with its own tradition and is all hold'em, all the time. Unless
otherwise noted, all events at this year's World Poker Open are no-limit
hold'em freezeouts.

Borgata Winter Poker Classic
January 29 - February 1, Borgata Casino, Atlantic City, NJ
The WPT stopped at the Borgata back in September, when Al Ardebili walked away
with nearly $1.5 million. The tour's return to Atlantic City's most modern
casino marks the fourth time it has visited the Borgata, but this is the first
installment of the Winter Poker Classic. All of the vents at the Winter Poker
Classic are in freezeout format.
